Take the Next Step Already!

Hey, Boss Lady! Are you ready to take the next step in your career?

Wait, don’t answer that.

Maybe a better question is: will you take the next step in your career?


After all… is anyone ever really ready?

Hint: the answer is no.


No one ever feels 100% ready for any of life’s most courageous adventures… you know: getting married, having kids - and yes - applying for a promotion.


In fact, if you wait until you’re 100% ready chances are you’ll miss out on a lot of great opportunities. So instead of asking if you’re ready, try asking yourself if you should do it anyway.


If you still aren’t sure just look for the signs. The simple fact that you’re reading this blog in the first place might be all the proof needed, but there is probably a lot more that you’re overlooking.

I’ve changed roles many times over the years and looking back now, I can tell you that each time I made the vulnerable decision to start a new job was because there seemed to be subtle hints from the universe telling me I was ready to take the next step- even if I didn’t feel ready. Especially when I didn’t feel ready.


Here are some signs you may be experiencing (and overlooking).


One. You’re more exhausted than usual.


Constant physical and mental exhaustion is a major sign that something needs to change. And a lot of the time that something is your job.


Let me specify, because this goes beyond the normal day-to-day tiredness that comes with the territory of working a full time job, paying bills, making dinner, cleaning house, putting the kids to bed… Hell, if I were to change jobs every time I felt tired, well, I’d have a new career almost every day. That’s not what I’m talking about.


There’s a difference between feeling tired and feeling the heaviness and dreadfulness of complete physical burnout. If you’ve ever experienced a burnout before, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The feeling comes on especially strongly when at work. You feel uninspired to get anything done.


It feels like you’re fighting the same fights every day, but getting nowhere.

This state of work-driven exhaustion is like a neon light from the universe flashing “Get Out!”

From personal experience I know that you can only avoid burnout for so long.


If you continue to ignore the signs the universe will creatively intervene in a way that cannot be ignored. Just ask me about the time I fell and broke my wrist when my newborn twins were less than 3 months old...


Two. You’re bored at work.


When you’re no longer being challenged and developing in a role everything starts to lose your interest. Completing tasks once felt like an accomplishment but now suddenly feels more like a burden. You find yourself getting annoyed more easily because you don’t have the same level of engagement that you used to have.


Things seem less important, including deadlines and milestones...not only is this dangerous for your overall satisfaction at work, it also can hurt your performance - which can impact your career in the long run.


If you are bored or uninspired, it’s probably time to find a new challenge.


Three. You are asked to train or mentor others.


Asking to train or mentor others can be a sign you're ready to advance, but this one is easily overlooked because we all have a deep-rooted desire to feel needed, and being asked to help share your knowledge and experience with others tickles that desire.


It feels good to be the subject matter expert; and knowing that your manager values you.


While this is a great compliment it may also be a sign that you are ready for an additional challenge.


Four. You are asked to help when your boss is out.


Similarly to being asked to train others, being asked to perform in some or all of your manager’s function can be an injection of confidence and acceptance. When you are asked to stand in, in any capacity, for your boss while they are out of the office or during busy periods at work - this is a great sign for your career.


You clearly have what it takes.


This is also a dangerous one. If it becomes too easy to ask you to take over workload, and you aren’t getting recognized or rewarded, you may be using energy in a non productive way.


Five. You catch yourself daydreaming.


Have you caught yourself thinking “I could do that.” When working with your manager or other leaders in your area?


Do you daydream about leading a team of people, getting a promotion, or finding a new challenge at work?


You aren’t alone.


So often when we’re ready to take the next step in our career, we start to build that reality in our minds before ever even glancing at job openings. This is a great sign that you are taking yourself seriously, because our thoughts often become our realities.



Do any of these sound familiar to you? Ultimately, if you pay attention and trust yourself, you probably already know! Remember, there really is no “right time” - you just have to set your

intention and go for it.
